The 2019 Extra Brut Clos des Maladries was picked on a south-facing Chardonnay plot in Avize, 30% of the base wines were fermented in oak, all went through malolactic conversion, tirage was under natural cork. The nutty, toasty creaminess of oak appears first on the nose while a touch of mint hovers. The palate, while still kissed by oak, gives us fruit and chalky tautness instead. Mirabelle comes to the fore, as does lemon, on a textured, creamy palate that has a lovely lemon pith astringency. Yes, this is very youthful, but it has much personality. There is concentration, vivaciousness and exquisite freshness.
