The Midleton Distillery, which also produces Jameson, Redbreast, and many of the other most famous Irish Whiskeys, has released the annual Very Rare series since 1984. They have progressively built up older stocks and thus more recent releases have included considerably older whiskeys than in the past. Always a blend of Pot Still and Irish Grain whiskeys, Midleton Very Rare is the distillery's flagship and most sought after bottling.
Midleton Very Rare 2020 marks the final release crafted by Master Distiller Brian Nation (just the second to create Midleton Very Rare, his predecessor being Barry Crockett, while Keevin O'Gorman will take over for 2021), hence it is considered highly collectable. This edition contains the oldest whiskeys yet (13 to 35 years old) as well as the highest proportion of Pot Still whiskey (the quintessential Irish style utilizing both malted and unmalted barley.
Official Tasting Notes:
"Selected each year with passion and precesion, this expression offers an inital burst of tangy fruity sweetness on the palate, with poot still spices building over time to add a mild prickle of chili oil. Indeed, Brian's love of a single pot still is reflected in this exceptional whiskey, while preserving the balance and beauty for while Midleton Very Rare is renowned."
