The 2018 Corton les Renardes Grand Cru is 100% whole cluster and 100% new French oak. Frankly, that new oak is barely discernible on the nose, so well is it enmeshed with the fruit. This feels very sensual. The palate is medium-bodied with supple tannins and a fine bead of acidity. Like the nose, quite sensual, although it will need a few years to fully subsume the wood.
An overtly floral nose reveals notes of lilac, lavender, rose petal and violet that add a touch of elegance to the ripe red currant, plum, spice and forest floor scents that are also trimmed in noticeable wood. The suave, round and seductively textured broad-shouldered flavors possess find mid-palate concentration before terminating in a long, sappy and intense finish that is quite serious but not really especially austere. With that said, it's clear that this is going to require an extended snooze in a cool cellar.
