The ripe apple aromas of the ’21 Meursault Gouttes d’Or are lush but do not veer into tropical. The texture is rich, but the acidity of the year ensures a pleasant balance despite the substance and weight of this powerful wine. With a few years in bottle, it should show even better, and it will undoubtedly hold 10 – 20 years in a proper cellar. The wine comes from a 0.40-hectare parcel in fairly deep clay soils, accounting for the density of the wine it provides.
The 2021 Meursault Goutte d'Or 1er Cru has an unerring sense of harmony on the nose, very focused and precise, demonstrating a little more concentration than the Bouchère. The palate is beautifully balanced with fine balance, crisp acidity, orange rind and touches of apricot, mixed with walnut and almond towards its sustained finish. This is superb.
This is also moderately reduced and revealing little save for a whisper of citrus character. More interesting are the beautifully textured bigger-bodied flavors that possess both more muscle and power that builds on the compact, serious and palate coating finish where a touch of bitter zest slowly surfaces. This beauty is a bit more tightly wound and a wine that will need all of a decade to reach its apogee.
Offering up aromas of pear, sweet stone fruit, fresh mint and white flowers, the 2021 Meursault 1er Cru Goutte d'Or is medium to full-bodied, deep and layered, with an impressively textural, muscular profile for the vintage.
