Fermenting white grape varietals on skins is an approach that goes back ages, though it requires some fine tuning beyond just a "make it like red wine" approach. Some white grape varietals, like Pinot Gris, can be quite phenolic, which lends itself to more course tannins if left unattended. Each year, as I explore fermentation decisions for all fermenters, I've found that restraint in duration of skin contact can dial in texture and preserve freshness when the goal is making an "orange" wine.
This particular bottling is a blend of skin contact Chardonnay from an organically farmed vineyard in the Eola Amity Hills and skin contact Pinot Gris from an organic vineyard in the Chehalem Mountains that sits over 1000ft elevation (it was the last pick of the 2021 harvest!). All native fermentations. I've come to think of this wine (and many "Orange" wines) as the Swiss Army knives of food pairing. Capable of going with a number of cuisines or, quite simply, to enjoy straight from the bottle on a beach somewhere. One can dream.
