Grüner Veltliner grapes were destemmed but not crushed. Fermentation on whole berries, total maceration for almost three weeks before pressing. Pressing fraction was reblended. Aging in 300l cigar shape oak barrels for 15 months. Bottled with little sulfure added, coarse filtration at bottling.
It resulted in a complex white wine that - tasted blindly - has more in common with red wine.
Grapes come from various terrassed vineyards throughout the valley (Buschenberg, Loibenberg and Hochrain), where we have to farm everything by hand without tractors.
2015: Alkohol 12,5% vol, trocken bei 1g/l RZ, 5,6g/l Säure, pH 3,4
Veyder-Malberg's 2015 Grüner Veltliner Alter-Native remains a fascinating and very promising wine. Fermented like a Pinot Noir (on the skins and in small barrels) the wine is intense, fresh and mineral as well as finely structured like Pinot Noir. Indeed, this Alter-Native Veltliner opens to new thoughts. The difference between white and red is only the color but not necessarily the style. This GV shows a great purity and intensity on the nose, is spicy and herbal and reveals some lovely seed aromas. On the palate this wine is fresh, finesse-full and round, shows grip and a lingering salinity. Unique style. Total production: six 300-liter barrels and a small vat of inox. The total of 2,300 bottles will be filled in spring 2017. I tasted this beauty again as a barrel sample at VieVinum in June 2016.
