The dark cassis fruit here has shadings of earth and smoke on the initial attack, while the texture on the palate is firmly structured but immensely pleasant, with grippy tannins, plenty of density, and rewarding length. The grapes come from a 0.28-hectare parcel in the Champs Traversins lieu-dit, but this is not indicated. The fruit is partially destemmed and fermented in open-top vats before ageing in cask (60% new).
The 2021 Echézeaux Grand Cru is matured with 50% whole bunches in 50% new oak. It has quite a sensual bouquet with slightly melted red fruit, thyme and crushed stone, somehow, "laid back" aromatics without leaving you feeling shortchanged. The palate is medium-bodied with fine-boned tannins, nicely integrated oak with a vibrant, sorbet-fresh finish. Excellent.
Once again there is plenty of floral influence to the even spicier aromas of exotic Asian style tea to the slightly riper red and dark berry fruit aromas. The supple and relatively rounded medium-bodied flavors possess better volume and solid punch on the more powerful if less mineral-driven finish. This could also use better depth but there should be no problem with more developing over time.
