The domaine lost 90% of their production in the lieu-dit Rouges du Bas, but 'only' 55% in Quartier de Nuits. The remaining wine is spectacularly delicious, with ripe, concentrated blackberry fruit, with flashes of fresh flowers and earth. The flavours are enlivened by crisp acidity and firm tannins that carry the wine to a lingering finish. One quarter of the grapes are fermented as whole clusters (the only wine in the cellar so treated), and the wine is ageing in cask (60% new, from four different coopers) to deliver this wine of dizzying telluric force.
A discreetly spicy and restrained nose somewhat grudgingly offers up its combination of plum, dark cherry, sandalwood and vaguely exotic aromas. The seductively textured yet not particularly dense medium-bodied flavors possess fine depth and focused power on the compact, serious and more prominently austere finale. This is really very pretty, and it too has fine mid to longer-term cellaring potential.
Cropped at a mere 17 hectoliters per hectare, the 2021 Echezeaux Grand Cru offers up aromas of red berries, cherries, peonies, sweet spices, orange rind and forest floor. Medium to full-bodied, supple and fleshy, with an ample core of fruit, lively acids and a bright, saline finish, it's deceptively concentrated and penetrating despite its elegant profile.
