The 2021 Volnay Clos des Chênes 1er Cru has a lovely, pure bouquet with wild strawberry, cranberry and light tertiary scents, the mineralité emerging with time. The palate is medium-bodied with fine-boned tannins and well-judged acidity; the 2021 is very elegant in style with an airy, poised finish. Alas, just two barrels this year.
Lafon’s production from his 0.38 hectares in Clos des Chênes was off by 70% due to the frost and rain in 2021. The wine shows a pomegranate and cranberry fruit character scented with lavender and a salty minerality. The tannins were somewhat astringent, and the acidity is fairly crisp. The grapes were fermented with a bit more extraction – there were three punch downs in 2021 compared to none the prior year. The wine is ageing now in mostly older oak casks.
The 2021 Volnay 1er Cru Clos des Chênes is lovely, mingling aromas of cherries, berries and plums with hints of vine smoke in an incipiently complex bouquet. Medium to full-bodied, ample and fleshy, it's layered and nicely concentrated, with a seamless, charming profile.
A more elegant and even cooler nose reflects the essence of red cherry, green tea and spice wisps. The delicious and vibrant lighter weight flavors exude evident minerality on the slightly firmer and youthfully austere finale. This should also reward mid-term keeping, which should prove beneficial as it could use better depth.
