Seductive bouquet with a fine play of fruit and herbal spice, interspersed with the unique minerality of the site, reminiscent of flint; creamy, smooth texture; refined, bell-clear Riesling full of charm and grace. Refined, bell-clear Riesling full of grace and charm. {Wine professor Bernulf Bruckner}
Spitz village, at the western end of the Wachau region, is generally cooler than other areas – now seen as an advantage in an age of global warming. Gritsch picked this on 6 November, and the ripeness is evident, with juicy apricot aromas. But the attack is fresh and bright, with tangy acidity and no sense of heaviness. Ample energy drives this taut, lean citric style, with its silky texture and long, mouthwatering finish.

Excellent tension between the ripe-peach and floral side of this wine and the herbal freshness, which together with bright acidity drive it along at a brisk clip. Nice mineral bite at the long finish. Drink or hold.
The 2019 Ried Kalkofen Viessling Riesling Smaragd comes from a steep, terraced vineyard in the Spitzer Graben where the soils combine acidic Spitz granodiorite gneiss with base-rich amphibolite. The wine opens with a deep, intense, mineral and very elegant bouquet with concentrated and aromatic fruit aromas built by highly ripe and maybe also overripe berries. Picked late, on November 6th, this is a full-bodied, rich, refined and elegant Kalkofen with crystalline and salty acidity and fine mineral grip. This is an excellent effort from Franz-Josef Gritsch, and it's much less ascetic than the Kalkofen from the Grabenwerkstatt. 13.5% alcohol. Tasted at the domain in June 2021.
