Planted in 1984, Bugialla is a 4ha plot at 500 metres on stony Galestro soil. Owner Piero Lanza picks the larger bunches first for the Chianti Classico and leaves the smaller bunches to ripen longer for the Riserva. Just bottled, the 2019 is shy but with coaxing, aromas of herbs and lavender emerge. Tight on the entry, it expands with a soft ripeness of charming brambly fruit, succulent with compact chalky tannins. Intricately textured and long.
The key word here is balance. The organic Poggerino 2019 Chianti Classico Riserva Bugialla (with 10,400 bottles made) shows classic lines with fresh primary fruit, medium-rich concentration and lots of harmonious fruit versus spice. The results are vibrant and bright, and you definitely taste that distinctive freshness that is a hallmark of Radda in Chianti.
Expressive, sporting cherry, plum, floral and mineral flavors matched to a vibrant frame. Open, elegant and beautifully balanced, making this approachable now. Features fine length, too. Drink now through 2036. 850 cases made, 475 cases imported.
The 2019 Chianti Classico Riserva Bugialla is a dark, powerful wine. Black cherry, incense, leather and spice give this virile Riserva plenty of complexity. All that is missing is perhaps a bit of freshness. Even so, the 2019 is impressive, especially in terms of its depth and overall substance.
