The 2016 Brunello di Montalcino Riserva Massimo makes itself known with a display of peppery herbs, crushed stone and undergrowth that gives way to wild strawberries and smoke. This is polished and soothing to the senses, offering sweet spices and dark red fruits. Saline-mineral tension and fine tannins collect toward the close, creating a more grippy feel, as the 2016 Riserva finishes structured and chewy with notes of licorice and inner rose. This is aromatically very pretty today, but a few years of cellaring will be required to help soften its structural clout.

A firm and linear red with cherry, black berry, cedar and sandalwood. It’s full and integrated with length and focus. Lovely clarity. Give it another two or three years to open and come together.
