The 2016 Malvazija is my favorite of this bunch from Zidarich. The skin maceration times on most of these wines is long, and those slightly oxidative aromas of caramel and butterscotch mark all these wines heavily. Sometimes with these natural wine techniques it becomes difficult to recognize the characteristics of the individual grape variety. However, this Malvasia is the most fragrant of these wines—and the most beautiful. You do get some good primary fruit here with apricot and candied apple.
The 2016 Malvasia is a gorgeous expression of the variety. It blends yellow flowers with notes of apricot and pear, further complicated by hints of ginger and sour citrus. The textures are soft, cast across a feminine frame, enlivened by brisk acids and saline-minerality. Spiced-orange rinds, hints of grapefruit and pretty inner florals linger, perfectly punctuating the experience. All of this, and at only 12.5% abv. - very nice.
