Picked in a second and final botrytis selection on October 31, the 300 liters of Zilliken 2009 Saarburger Rausch Riesling Auslese Gold Capsule A.P. #2, display a striking, cloud-like sense of wafting buoyancy along with alluring, caressing creaminess of texture. The scents and flavors here are from another world than that of the early-harvested auction Auslese, dominated by fig, date, and white raisin. You catch the high acidity rippling down your spine, but it is essentially sublimated, like an electrical current that keeps the wine running through to a finish of phenomenal sheer persistence if embryonic evolutionary state. Even without genuine complexity to its credit, this is in every other respect – purity, balance, enervation, and did I already say "persistence"? – a marvel. It can join the list of wines from the present collection that truly needs as well as deserves to be cellared. Check in on it again in 7-10 years and expect it to last for 40. What you can expect? I am pretty sure this wine is for now showing less than it's hiding, and whatever future complexity it's hiding is almost by definition a secret.
Pale golden yellow. Subtle aromas of baked apple, cinnamon and vanilla. The creamy, rich papaya fruit is still covered in baby fat so that the underlying acidity is almost completely masked today. In spite of the wine's weight, a spicy elegance dominates the finish
