Producer's Notes

2016: The 2016 Estate Pinot Noir is from a classic vintage, showing rich blackberry, star anise, strawberry, and rhubarb aromas, evolving into earthy notes of forest floor and leather. It has dense flavors of raspberry, blood orange, and roasted walnuts, with a mineral-driven structure and supple tannins for immediate enjoyment and long-term aging potential.

Winemaking Notes: We hand-picked each block and delivered firm, cool clusters to the winery before sunrise. We then hand-sorted and de-stemmed the fruit before cold maceration and native yeast fermentation—the free-run wine aged in 44% new French oak for 15 months.

2017: This 12 Pinot Noir clone blend from our Sonoma Coast estate displays deep ruby and garnet colors. It features aromas of raspberry, strawberry, spiced cherry pie, and stone fruit with floral and earthy notes. The palate offers bright raspberry flavors, balanced acidity, and delicate tannins, with dark chocolate, tamarind finish, and earthy undertones. This elegant wine will continue to develop over the next 10 years.

Winemaking Notes: We selected the fruit by hand and brought it to the winery before sunrise. After hand-sorting and de-stemming, we transferred the fruit to a tank for cold maceration followed by more than two weeks of natural yeast fermentation. The free-run wine was then aged for 15 months in 58% new French oak barrels.

2018: The 2018 Wayfarer Vineyard Pinot Noir bursts with aromas of violets, lavender, raspberry, and blackberry. It offers an elegant balance of juicy acidity and rich tannins, with notes of forest floor and dark chocolate on the finish. While enjoyable now, it will reward patience if aged in the cellar.

Winemaking Notes: We carefully selected and delivered the clusters to the winery before sunrise. Then, we hand-sorted and destemmed the fruit before initiating cold maceration for five to seven days. This was followed by over two weeks of 100% native yeast fermentation. Finally, the free-run wine was aged for 15 months in 58% new French oak.

2019: The wine offers aromas of violet, lavender, boysenberry, cherry, plum, dried herbs, and fennel seed. It has a smooth, full-bodied, and creamy finish, balanced with lively acidity. This Pinot Noir is well-rounded, possessing both focus and finesse, with a subtle power for aging.

Winemaking Notes: We hand-picked firm, cool clusters, hand-sorted the fruit, and reserved 4% for whole-cluster fermentation. The rest was destemmed and transferred to tank for more than two weeks of 100% native yeast fermentation. The free run wine was aged for 15 months in 53% new French oak.

2016 - 97 points: Leading off the Pinot Noirs, the 2016 Pinot Noir Wayfarer Vineyard was completely destemmed and spent 15 months in 45% new French oak. It offers a bright framboise, cranberry, exotic flower, and spice-driven bouquet that carries to a medium-bodied, silky Pinot Noir that has everything in all the right places. Showing more floral, spice, and forest floor with time in the glass, incredible tannin quality, and a great finish, it’s certainly on par with the single parcel/clone-driven releases.

2017 - 95 points: The largest production cuvée based on a mix of clones, the 2017 Pinot Noir Wayfarer Vineyard was mostly de-stemmed and spent 15 months in 50-60% new French oak. It reveals a bright ruby-tinged color and offers a feminine style in its notes of raspberries, flowers, rose hips, and spice. It’s fine, incredibly elegant, has fine tannins, and glides over the palate.

Wine Advocate

2018 - 98+ points: The 2018 Pinot Noir Wayfarer Vineyard has a medium ruby color and slowly opening perfume of garrigue, dried orange peel, prosciutto and rose petals with mineral-laced cranberry and red and black berry fruits. The medium-bodied palate, grainy and incredibly fresh, slowly gains in flavor amplitude and nuance in the mouth, ending in a fanfare of spicy detail.

2019 -  95 points: The 2019 Pinot Noir Wayfarer Vineyard comes from all 11 clones grown on the Wayfarer property. Medium ruby-purple in color, it has broody aromas of blood orange, iron, rhubarb and cranberry sauce with notes of dusty earth and dried herbs. The palate manages incredible intensity, lift and expansive flavor layers with a very long, juicy finish that continually calls you in for another sip!
